L'Arch. Laura Rubino e l'Arch. ...a COPERTINO L'intervento dell'Arch.

GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE AND URBAN BIODIVERSITY FOR SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT AND THE GREEN ECONOMYThe GREEN SURGE project is a collaborative project between 24 partners in 11 countries. It is funded by the European Commission Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). GREEN SURGE will identify, develop and test ways of linking green spaces, biodiversity, people and the green economy in order to meet the major urban challenges related to land use conflicts, climate change adaptation, demographic changes, and human health and wellbeing. It will provide a sound evidence base for urban green infrastructure planning and implementation, exploring the potential for innovation in better linking environmental, social and economic ecosystem services with local communities. Project Objectives: Working from the local to the city-regional level, the project aims to:
We live in an urban era with more than half of the population of the world living in cities. Due to the high concentration of people, environmental as well as social and economic developments can have dramatic effects for the better or worse of urban populations. Economic and social changes, including the influx of migrants, pose great challenges. Moreover, urbanization and the functioning of modern cities threaten the natural environment globally. They are main sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions causing climate change, but they will be also strongly affected by its negative effects. Therefore, urban planners, decision-makers, and citizens share a huge responsibility for in-creasing sustainability and preservation of natural life systems on planet Earth. Urban green space can provide multiple benefits for well-being and quality of life of the population and mitigate or even hinder hazardous situations. Therefore, urban green space networks are increasingly recognized as an essential infrastructure that needs to be planned and managed in concert with other hard and soft infrastructures. They can make substantial contributions to successfully meet important policy objectives for sustainable urban development, such as enhancing social cohesion, supporting the urban economy and adaptation of cities to a changing climate.
